This Curt T-Connector wiring harness was relatively easy to install on my 2020 Highlander. I tried the behind-the-taillight version and it was a no-go. After a year of use I haven't had any problems.
I wish I had bought a towing package with my new Highlander regardless of the cost. Then it would have been plug and play and no concern. I routed the wiring to the best of my ability to hug the bottom of the car but know that if I ever drive off the pavement (and I use my car for everything) there is the risk of something snagging the power wire. I also found regular butt connectors vs heat shrink sort of cheesy - did not use. Was also very nervous in removing tail lights and re-installing. Only takes one break of something to wish you had never gone this route.
The harness is very good quality and the actual connections area snap but getting to the connectors behind the tail lights was not easy for me. There are no videos made yet for the 2020 and 2021 highlander installation and the instructions are not comprehensive on the body panel separation needed at the tail lights to get to the connectors. I was concerned that I was going break something. I did two additional things for my installation also. First I enclosed the wire from the battery in a 3/8 plastic wire loom slit tubing for added protection, and secondly, I did not use the crimp connectors that came with the kit but soldered and heat shrunk those connections instead. I also put a drop of solder on the pre made white ground wire connector. I made sure all the wiring was secured with zip ties as best as possible wherever I could get to it. It’s not difficult per say to install this kit but it was time consuming for me and a bit nerve racking behind the taillights. Final result: works great!
